The Metzeler Formula 600 class, and you heard it right folks, this was the final outing for defending champion Gary May on his famous R6, love him for winning, hate him for winning, he has been the man to beat since Thundersport GB`s birth and what a way to bow out of the class too, with three wins out of three.
It wasn`t quite as simple as he`d have liked though I`m sure and in each race, three separate rider`s stepped up to have a go but to their frustration, May always had the ace up his sleeve.
Race one it was Darryl Cox who tried his luck, and the young man who`s only in his second full racing season put up a good fight, and after he`d seen off the fighting Michael Price, he was reeling in May and at one point got the gap down to just over a second, but May just had a tenth or two more and in the end crossed the line 2.6 seconds ahead of a chuffed Cox who recorded his personal best finish.
In the super-pole race on saturday the win went to Gary May followed by Darryl Cox second place and Michael Price in third, with the faseted lap of the race going to Darryl Cox at 59.88sec with an average speed of 87.52 mph.
Race two, Jenny Tinmouth wanted to play too and as a rider that has already beaten Gary before, May was a little more wary this time and didn`t let his guard drop at all. In fairness to Jenny, she ended up just six tenths behind May but you got the feeling Gary had a little bit more to give if he really had to. Michael Price came home in third again having won the battle against Darryl Cox and also grabbed the fastest lap too, could he be next up to challenge May?
In short, yes. Michael`s great recovery from Cadwell Park had continued into this final race and he now wanted the chance to beat the defending champion on his last outing, the #175 IPS sponsored Triumph was doing all it could, as was Michael but again, Gary had the final say and with a lap to go, Price settled for second ahead of a chasing Jenny Tinmouth whilst Gary May saluted the crowd by taking his final victory in a class that he`s dominated since day one.
